Description
For individuals unable to complete their income tax and benefit return themselves and are unable to pay for assistance, the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) may be able to assist. Volunteers can help complete the income tax and benefit return if income is low and tax situation is simple.

Can prepare current and previous years' returns.
Eligibility
These suggested maximum income levels should serve as a guideline only
Single individual - up to $40,000
Two-people family - up to $55,000
Three people - up to $60,000
Four people - up to $65,000
Five people - up to $70,000
More that five people - $70,000, plus $5,000 for each additional person
Interest income limited to under $1,200
Local community organizations have the flexibility to adjust or set additional eligibility criteria for taxpayers based on the local economic environment, the population they serve, and their own capacity
Volunteers do not prepare tax returns for complex situations such as:
  • returns for deceased persons
  • individuals who file for bankruptcy
  • self-employed individuals
  • individuals who report capital gains or losses
  • individuals with foreign property or income
  • individuals who report employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses
Eligible taxpayers normally served by the CVITP include:
  • Indigenous peoples
  • modest-income individuals
  • newcomers to Canada
  • adults 65 years and older
  • housing-insecure individuals
  • persons with disabilities
  • students and youth
Application Process
In person by appointment. Drop offs also available.
